The Hill mourns the loss of Tom Butler, Sr.![]() Tom, Sr. with his sons, Jim and Tom, Jr.
With great sadness, Headmaster David R. Dougherty shares the news that Tom Butler, who for almost 22 years served The Hill School in many capacities, passed away this morning, July 9, after a lengthy illness. In an e-mail to The Hill community, Headmaster Dougherty wrote the following: "Recognized in a 1987 Hill News article as “Mr. Everything” at The Hill, Tom in every one of his roles – manager of the Campus Store, security officer, summer maintenance employee, driver, and head of the team that maintains the School’s hockey facility – was a great friend of Hill students, faculty, and families. Tom retired in March, 2007 at the end of the hockey season, but several months earlier, on December 2, 2006, was honored at opening ceremonies of the new Hall-Eccleston Hockey Rink, driving the new Zamboni dedicated in his name and receiving the cheers of hundreds of people there who loved and admired him. Plans for the funeral, not yet complete, will be announced as soon as possible." Tom celebrated his retirement from Hill at a special gathering with his family and friends. Please click here to read more about Tom and view photos from his retirement party. The entire Hill School community will miss Tom tremendously and we extend our deepest sympathies to all of his friends and family members, especially his son, Tom, Jr., who is a member of Hill's security staff. We invite alumni, parents, students, faculty, family, and friends to share your memories of Tom with us to post on the website. Please send your tributes, and, if you wish, photos, to Jennifer Bechtel at jbechtel@thehill.org. The Official Web Site of The Hill School Hockey Association |
