Boys Varsity Team Looks Strong for Dec. 3 Debut Against LaSalle

The Hill's '07-08 Team

The ‘08-09 Boys Varsity hockey season promises to be one of the strongest in recent years. With a solid core of returning players, as well as an enthusiastic mix of new faces, the coaching staff is optimistic that the Hill program will be able to build on the momentum gained at the end of last year. Although the team lost a significant group of players, Head Coach Matt Mulhern, now entering his fifth season behind the bench, believes this year’s mix of skill and determination will carry the Blues to a successful campaign.

Senior Captain Jake Colby will provide a steady influence on the blue line as well as leadership in the dressing room as he looks to close his Hill career on a high note. He will have a solid core of veterans with him along the way, led by Senior Assistant Captain Michael Brofft. The Blues will need these two leaders to step up immediately as this season’s schedule will provide top tier competition from beginning to end.

On Wednesday, December 3 the boys will hit the ice for the season opener against defending Pennsylvania state champions, LaSalle Academy. This game has turned into a tradition each year, and marks the beginning of a daunting stretch of games. The Blues will face Prep powerhouses throughout the opening month of their schedule, including Cushing, Lawrence and Culver Academy, and highlighted by appearances in the Lawrence Academy and Tabor Academy tournaments. These venues provide Hill players with top- notch competition as well as exposure to Division I, Division III, and club level coaching staffs. After the holiday season, Hill spends much of their time in the confines of the Eccleston/Hall Arena, playing host to both prep and club teams, as well as defending New Jersey state champions, Delbarton. Late in February, Hill will travel to the Empire Cup for a season ending tournament – one last opportunity to compete for a championship.

One thing is for sure, there will be no shortage of action this year for the Varsity team. And with a strong group of veteran leaders providing direction for the injection of new energy, Hill Hockey is on a path for success!
