To Members of the Hill School Faculty and Staff:

We at The Hill have received the sad news that Alexander H. Revell III, a member of the Class of 1943 and instructor of English emeritus, passed away January 6, 2009. From 1949 until 1985 he was one of the great masters of The Hill, and until last week continued to teach, conducting a class in Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part One to residents of Rosemont in Bryn Mawr, where he and his wife Cita have lived in recent years.

After graduating from Northwestern University in 1948, Alex joined The Hill English faculty in 1949. In 1978, Alex was appointed chair of the English Department, a position he held until his retirement in 1985. Under his leadership, both the English Department organization and curriculum were successfully restructured. In particular, Alex emphasized instruction in writing, earning praise from students, later if not immediately, for requiring of them weekly two-page essays. To recognize Alex’s contributions and service to the School, an English classroom on the third floor of the Academic Center was named in his honor as partof The Hill’s Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2000.

In addition to his work in the classroom, over the years Alex served as adviser to The Hill News and coached several sports, most notably baseball, his favorite, all the more this year, when his beloved Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series.

And in all of his work Alex was unfailingly reliable, boasting that he never missed a day of class in all of his years at The Hill, except for one when he was snow-bound in the Revells’ residence.

Described by one of his Hill masters as a “fine boy and leader of his class” during his days at Hill as a student, Alex was involved in numerous activities. He was a three- sport varsity athlete, playing hockey, football, and baseball; served on the Dial board; was chairman of The Hill News; earned induction into the Cum Laude Society; and was a member of the English Club.

Alex was a member of a Revell family legacy of Hill graduates spanning four generations, including his father, the late Alexander H. Revell, Jr. ’12; uncle, the late Richardson Revell ’23; sons, David Revell ’66 and Steven Revell ’68; and grandsons, Andrew Revell ’96, Theodore G. Requa ’01, and James A. Requa ’03.

Following his retirement, Alex returned to campus often for athletic contests, and most recently this past June as a special “honorary member” of the Class of 1958, which celebrated its 50th reunion. Alex led a book discussion of The Killer Angels with members of that class, an event which they considered a highlight of the weekend.

Plans for a memorial service this spring will be announced soon by the family. Meantime, former students, colleagues, and friends of Alex are welcome to remember him in remarks directed to our Web site.

The Hill Community sends its deepest sympathies to Alex’s beloved wife, Cita – his partner in full commitment to the life of the School and its students -- and the entire Revell family.
