IHL Championship-Varsity B Slips to Haverford in 2X Overtime Shootout
Critics Call It 'Game of the Millennium'EPIC. It’s the only word to describe the game played here last night between the Haverford School and the Hill School Varsity B team. Coaches and players agreed that it was one of the greatest games we had ever participated in, with both teams raising their level of play through competition. The scoring opened with 4:30 to go in the first period with Haverford getting the first goal. Hill followed with a goal of their own with 2:00 minutes remaining in the first. But Haverford answered right back scoring with just 47 seconds left in the first to make it 2 to 1 Haverford at the end of the first period. Hill came back in the second and took the lead with back to back goals at the 12:29 mark and again at the 8:20 mark of the second period. Just a 1:15 later Haverford rallied to score the tying goal with 6:55 remaining in the second. And the second period came to a close with the score tied 3 to 3. The third period saw great end to end action with both goalies making some very good saves to keep their respective teams tied at the end of regulation. The first overtime was a 10 minute sudden death session of 5 on 5 hockey. Several opportunities presented themselves but neither team could find the net. The second overtime was a 5 minute stanza of 4 on 4 hockey. With 37 seconds to go it seemed that all 8 skaters and the Haverford goalie were piled up in the Haverford crease. Some penalties were assessed to both teams but Haverford ended up skating the last 37 seconds a man down. The Fords managed to fend off Hill’s attack. And at the end of the second overtime the score remained 3 to 3. Each coach selected three players for the shoot out. Both goalies had played well all game long. Haverford, as the home team, chose to shoot first and scored with their first skater. Haverford’s goalie came up big with a stop on the first Hill skater. Haverford’s second skater “lit the light” for their second goal in the shootout. Hill came back with their second skater and tallied themselves to keep the game alive. On Haverford’s third attempt, Hill’s goalie made a great save wide to his left along the ice to keep it 2 to 1 in the shootout. Hill needed a goal with their final skater to keep the game alive and scored with a shot over the left shoulder of the Haverford goalie to tie the shootout at 2. Haverford’s fourth skater scored to put Haverford up by one. The game came down to the fourth Hill skater facing a Haverford goalie. A big stop by the Haverford goalie ended what was one of the most competitive and entertaining high school hockey games that I have seen. Both teams should be proud of the effort and the quality of play that they displayed in the championship game. It is a tribute to the athletes, the coaches, and the school programs that they represent. The final score was 6 to 5 Haverford in the shootout. Although disappointed, we are very proud of our team for the way they played and the way they conducted themselves. They represented The Hill well. The IHL has been great for our team and we are looking forward to expanding the league and creating more lasting memories like the ones forged last night.
