Coaches' Corner Archiveposted: 2010-01-28 Girls Hockey Midseason Update
The girls’ hockey team is having a great season so far and is looking forward to more success over the next month. While Hill’s six wins show just how well the players work together and the talent that they posses, the four losses the team has faced this year say just as much. Hill’s biggest losses this year have been to the Quakers U19 team (2-0) and to league opponent Morristown Beard (4-2). Keeping talented teams within two goals is an outstanding accomplishment, especially considering some of the losses Hill has faced in past seasons. Each member of the Hill squad contributes to the games and brings intensity, drive and determination to the ice. Sophomore goaltender Tori Trovato has been solid between the pipes. Her league save percentage stands at 96%, putting her at the top of the league. Hill’s wins and close losses are due to her outstanding talent. Newcomers Caitie Hope and Katelyn Hutchinson, on defense and offense respectively, have boosted the talent level of the team. Returning player Alex Peters leads the offense, confidently carrying the puck down the ice. She’s scored seventeen goals and had nine assists already this season. Co-assistant captains Avery Lieberman and Victoria Gerberding play hard each game, inspiring other players to do the same. Captain Jackie Massare has had an outstanding season so far. Her play at both ends of the ice is exceptional. She is the definition of hardworking and her intensity is contagious. She leads by example on the ice. Senior Jacky Braca continues to work hard on defense, bringing competitive drive and hard work to each game. Rounding out the defense are senior Jennifer Kang and junior Allie Griswold. Both of these players have shown much improvement and are solid in the defensive zone. On offense Sam Rodden has improved tremendously from last season. She is quick to the puck, aggressive and for her hard work in front of the net, has scored two goals and earned two assists. Kailin Vollmuth and Emily Kerwin, both new to their positions continue to work hard each practice and are valuable members of the squad. With such a great group of players, the team is looking forward to more success in the league when they take on Princeton Day School, Shady Side, Princeton High School and Rye Country Day School in the weeks to come. It is Coach Olney’s goal to finish the regular season among the top four teams in the league. This will put Hill in a great position for playoffs, which Hill hosts this year at the end of February. With continued hard work and determination, the team should find great success at the playoff tournament.
