The Hill Boys Varsity hockey team wrapped up another very successful season on Sunday with an 8-3 trouncing of Cardinal O’Hara. Senior Sean Berry started off the scoring less than one minute into the contest. Goals were added by fellow seniors Kyle Drury with two and Brandon Fruchter had a hat trick and Ryan Sterrett with one. Junior forward Marcello DeAngelis added the final tally. The squad finished with a strong 14-11-1 record. The team had a very strong start to the season, going 4-2 in their first six games of the season including a 2-1 win over arch rival Lawrenceville in the championship game of the Rider Cup at the Albany Academy tournament. The following weekend, the Blues put together another strong performance at the Groton Academy Christmas tournament. The team went 2-1-1 which included wins over North Yarmouth Academy and Proctor Academy, a tie against Culver Military Academy, and a loss to Cushing Academy. Following the success at Groton, the team returned from break unable to pick up where they left off. The team lost six straight games including all three games at the Tabor Academy tournament. Despite the skid, the boys and coaching staff maintained a positive attitude and relentless work ethic to get things back on track, winning eight of their last ten games. This success was a glimpse of happiness as the team coped with a missing comrade, Wes Schlauch. Schlauch, suffered a stroke over winter long weekend. He has been fighting hard and continues to make improvement day by day. The Hill got strong performances from every player on the team. Max Novak (committed to Union College fall 2011) and Marcello DeAngelis had very strong seasons for the second year in a row. Novak posted 25 goals and 25 assists for 50 points, while DeAngelis put up 23 goals and 35 assists for 58 points. Steve Messina (committed to Bowdoin College fall 2010) was a brick wall between the pipes again this season, finishing with a .905 save percentage and breaking his own record for saves in a season with 667. Brandon Fruchter anchored the defense and also provided quite a bit of offense finishing the season with 7 goals and 21 assists for 28 points. Sam Leech and Kyle Drury (Committed to University of Delaware) had break out seasons. Both had just one goal each in their Hill careers prior to this season, but they were able to find their aim and really contribute. Leech tallied 10 goals and four assists for 14 points and Drury netted 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 points. PG Ryan Sterrett provided an offensive boost while fellow seniors Sean Berry and Chris Howell were known as “penalty kill specialists.” The team has a strong core of returning players from the crease, all the way up to the front line. Goaltender Michael Strauss will return along with defenseman, Chris Troy, Kyle Brown, Brayden Penner, and Chris Coppins. Returning forwards include Sam Leech, Julian Fazi, and Dylan Fox. The 14 wins put together by the team included three against rival Lawrenceville by the scores of: 7-3, 2-1, and 4-3. These three victories made it six in a row in the last two years. posted: 2010-03-03 Girls Season Wrap Up
The Hill Girls Ice Hockey team had a great season this year. Our season began on a high note with our defeat of Holton Arms Academy 8-0. Although it was only the first game, the team played with a high level of teamwork that extended from our first game to our last. Throughout the season, win or lose, every player was positive and showed great love and respect for each other. The team’s chemistry this year was exceptional and I was proud to be a part of such a supportive and talented group of girls. This season there were so many memorable experiences and mechanical mishaps. It seems that team adventures gravitate to this group of girls. Whether we were stuck in the middle of nowhere in a broken down bus or we were delayed due to the vast amounts of snow we received this winter, we used the exciting experiences to allow us to bond as a team. After a tough game one cold winter night, the Lady blues piled back into a bus in an empty secluded parking lot down the road from the rink. As we ate our post game meal, the bus driver turned the key. THUMP THUMP THUMP. He tried starting the bus again and failed. The bus had broken down. It was seven o’clock at night and we were stuck in a powerless bus at a rink in North Jersey. After about 45 minutes of waiting in the dark, we decided to walk back into the rink. Finally, at around nine o’clock, we got word that the bus had finally been restarted. We walked the lengthy distance back to the bus and began our two hour journey home. Although most would call the occurrence a disaster, we called it exciting and unbelievable. We looked at it as more time to bond as a team in the cold, wintery tundra of north jersey! Throughout the season we had a great number of fantastic victories and many close losses and despite dealing with some injuries, we fought through and held second place in the league at the conclusion of the regular season. Although we had some misfortunes in the playoffs, we ended the season with our heads held high and our integrity upheld. Our awesome and talented captain, Jackie Massare was a model of sportsmanship, skill and positivity. Our great coaches were dedicated to the team and kept us prepared for the challenging games. I know our five seniors (Jackie Braca, Jackie Massare, Victoria Gerberding, Avery Lieberman and Jenn Kang) will be sorely missed and the team wishes them the best of luck as they move on to college. posted: 2010-02-24 The Goon Squad
This year’s Boy’s Varsity ‘B’ hockey team did not bring home the IHL trophy. Although we did not achieve our ultimate goal this season, we accomplished success both on and off the pond. With key returners such as PJ “Flowseidon” Mara ‘10, and John “Beaver” Oberbeck ‘10, leadership was at a surplus. Through inspirational speeches, rants, and even the occasional recital of Edgar Allen Poe, John Oberbeck sparked the energy, and bestowed the will to win, in each and everyone one of us. Through his flow, and fine character Co-Captain PJ Mara, lead our squad to a 4-13-1 record. Chris ‘Grizzly Adams’ Kontes ‘11, a three year letterman had an impressive season. Playing on a line with the talented goal scoring combo, Daniil ‘Crazy Eyes’ Serov’13, and Sam Previtte ‘12, Chris had a productive season. Chris Kontes led the way with over 52.5 big hits, while Sam Previtte and Daniil Serov, managed to finish number one and two respectively in points. Other three year lettermen include, Henry ‘the Gorilla’ Rand ‘11, Nicholas ‘the Blade’ La Branche ‘11, and Ron Schiavone. Henry had an impressive season in net, finishing with the second highest save percentage on the team, second only to Mike Strauss. The Blade also had an impressive year proving to be an always trustworthy defenseman. Ron Schiavone, with the sense of the ice similar to Mario Lemieux, was a key contributor to our team’s success. Whether it was a dangle or blocked shot, Ron’s intensity was evident in each and every game. Jaime Brennan ’11, coming off a devastating injury from the previous season really came to play this year. With huge open ice hits, great clears, and “almost a goal”, his play earned him the respect of the team. Steven ‘Patty Mayonnaise’ Puth ‘12, Wayne Wancio ‘12, Alex Evens ‘12, all returning players, brought the dedication needed for success to each and every practice. Wayne with his aggressive play and intimidating stature reeked havoc in the offensive zone, while Alex Evens the former manager, managed to pot a goal. All the new members to the team such as Matt ‘Julie the Cat’ Dywer ‘12, Pat ‘Trick’ O’Mealia ‘11, Eric ‘Newmanhiser’ Neumeyer ‘12, Hunter “Doug Funny’ Erensel ‘12, ‘Phat’rick Carmody ‘13, Danny ‘Boy’ Alam ‘12, and Andrew ‘the Assassin’ Lee ‘12, also contributed immensely to the squad. Through the contributions to the players above, Hill Varsity “B” Puck was able to have another successful season, once again making history in the Thunderdome. At this time I would like to thank on behalf our entire team, both of our dedicated coaches Mr. Lagor, and Mr. Brusko, along with our loyal fans, Mrs. Oberbeck, Mr. O’Mealia, and our outstanding manager Paul, “Pauley Walnuts” Churack. Also I would like to wish the best of luck to our two seniors on the team PJ Mara, and John Oberbeck at the next level, collegiate Varsity ‘B’ hockey.
