Way to go Griswolds!

Beautiful!

Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Griswold, parents of Allie, Hill class of 2011 and future member of the HHA, generously donated funds to paint the Zamboni. Many thanks to the Griswold’s and their dedication to the Hockey program at Hill.

Hockey Alumni Skate Through Record Blizzard to Fight for Hill!

Another Day in the HHA!

White Trounces Blue 8-6 in Annual Alumni Match-Up

While Old Man Winter ripped up the Atlantic Seabord last weekend, shutting down the Nation's capital (thank goodness!) and cancelling all school athletic events and even the Bissell Wrestling Dedication (pity!), the Annual Hill School Hockey Alumni Skate powered on as scheduled last Saturday, February 6, 2010 with 14 skaters returning for the annual matchup with the addition of Varsity players and their coaches providing the competition.

Playing seniors from all three teams--Varsity, Varsity B and Girls Varsity (the White Team) trounced Blue 8-6 with the superior goaltending of our Hill Varsity Goaltender.
Chris Bala '97 scored first for the Whites and then took a back seat letting the brothers Durling and Durling dominate White play. At one point, the Whites were up 6-0.

Bluemen included Sandy Sanders '65 and Peter Drennan '74 who was making his first appearance since graduation and proving that some training is required and a release form is always good, when he pulled his hamstring in the third period. His brother Paul from the winingest team in Hill Hockey history (1976) was stymied by the weather. Richard Dolan '78 played a spirited and competent defense before moving up to spell a lagging Blue forward contingent led by David Watson '96.

The 14 Alumni attending were:

Chris Bala '97, Tom Dillon '71, Peter Drennan '74, Chapin Durling '98, Kip Durling '01, Rob Isham '70, Mike Kowalchick '97, Brian Laing '96, Paul Overbeck '80, Sandy Sanders '65, David Watson '96, Nate Yinger '05, and Bill Yinger ''95.

Don lewis, HHA Website Editor, failed to make it when his plane was canceled from Detroit.

Girls Team members who joined the fray were:

Jacky Braca '10, Jennifer Kang '10, Jackie Massare '10, Alex Peters '11, and Tori Trovato '12. Thanks ladies!

(Apologies for any inaccuracies - send us your comments so we can include more good details about the game)

2010 HHA Meeting Report

The Annual Meeting of the Hill Hockey Association took place Saturday, February 6th, in the "LaBranche Memorial Concourse" immediately after the skate. A skeleton quorum existed as a result of the snowstorm but the meeting progressed with alacrity with the following matters accomplished:

  1. HHA President Rob Isham '70 welcomed HHA members and guests and thanked Brian Laing '96 and Julie Kalis, Development, for all their hard work in organizing the day.
  2. Rob gave an overview of efforts and activities for the last year, which included:
    1. Extensive website re-write and re-design thanks to Don Lewis '71, Editor, and Stan Frantz '71, HHA webmaster.
    2. Fundraising efforts, thanks again to Don Lewis and Julie Kalis, amounted to approximately $10,000 with the following allocations for this year:
      1. $1000 to each team for whatever they wanted to spend it on (travel expenses, practice jerseys, etc.);
      2. Annual Alumni event food and drink;
      3. Subsidize annual end of the season banquet for all three teams w/HHA pins for graduating seniors;
      4. Hold a bantam tourney at the outset of the next season to showcase Hill hockey.
    3. FastHockey implemented as a prototype and deemed successful despite less than perfect wireless signal.

    Nate Yinger '05 as VP Media
    Bill Thomas '80 VP

    Joining Tom Dillon '71 and Don Lewis '71 as existing VPs

  4. Rob Isham presented Nate Yinger '05 with Vol. 1 of Willis Pierre's History of the Hill for his hard work in filming games on FastHockey and for his enormous contribution in assembling team photos and data for the website. Peter Drennan '76 was presented with Vol. 2 for coming the farthest for the event. The gentlemen were asked to exchange the 2 volumes next year if they actually read them.
  5. There were no questions, no old business and no new business worth pursuing and everyone who came received a Hill Hockey hat.
  6. The meeting was adjourned until next year

The Amazing History of Hill Hockey -- In Photos

The Winningest Team in Hill Hockey History - 1976-1977

The HHA has uploaded and posted incredible new files of hockey team photos and action shots going back to the early nineteenth century. Nate Yinger '05 worked on the project most of the summer and pulled off the impossible. It\'s an amazing walk through time and we're sure you'll enjoy the journey.

Just click on the Gallery link and go to Team Photos. Look for your team, your teammates and your friends while cruising through the amazing history of Hill Hockey!

Please help us identify the players. We need help with that! And share with us any photographs you might have. We've also been grinding on our For the Record section, a work in progress, where team and individual records are posted. If you have any stats to bring to our attention, please do! That goes for the Trophy Room section as well.

Huge thanks to both Nate Yinger '05 and webmaster Stan Frantz '71 for all their work!

Hats Off to Nate Yinger '05

Nate Yinger '05 spent a major part of his summer at Hill going through all the old Dials and the entire archive of Hill Hockey. He took hundreds of pictures and did hundreds of scans. The result is our impressive Team Photos section of the Photo Gallery.

In Nate's words:

"It was pretty awesome taking a walk back through time and seeing the past of Hill Hockey. It's pretty amazing how some things, such as the schedule, have changed over the years... but other things like fan support have been consistent (and very strong I might add -- the picture of the rowdies in 1986 is unreal). It was especially interesting looking at the Dials from the early 20th century and reading their recaps. They were complaining about bad ice even back then! It was a bit of work but well worth it. In fact it was blast looking through all the pictures."

Raised in York, PA, Nate played Varsity Soccer, Hockey and Track and Field (co-captain) at Hill. He also served as a prefect and was a Big Brother in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program. After graduating in 2005, Nate attended Lebanon Valley College where he earned a BA in English Communications. He was a four year member of their Track and Field Team, managed their soccer team his senior year, and worked as a sports reporter for the school's newspaper.
