Chalk Talk with Coach Hall 1952-5367 viewsIn the classroom picture, first-year Headmaster and Coach Edward T. Hall is about to diagram a play for the 1952-53 squad, the first of the modern era. Farthest from the camera at the left end of the front row of students is Neil Ulman, '56. On his right is Capt. John Clark, '53. The leftmost of the two white-shirted figures in the front row is assistant manager Dave Carnahan, 54. Behind him with glasses in the gray Hill jacket is Austin Hoyt, '55.
Hill's only rink in this first modern season was the one Coach Hall could draw on the blackboard. To its right in Mr. Hall's handwriting are assignments for transportation leaving at 1:45 PM the next day for a game or practice, probably at the AlBeth Rink in Allentown. Other practices and games were held at the old Philadelphia Arena at 45th and Market in West Philadelphia and at Princeton's Baker Rink.
Riding in the station wagon with Mr. Hall will be Drummond King, '53, Ken Merlin, 54, Walt Levering, '54, goaltender Ted Ames, '53, and one illegible name that perhaps someone else can identify.
Riding with chemistry teacher and assistant coach Ken Jackman will be Gerry Cantini, '54, Mike Jackson, '54 (?), manager Sonny LeMaitre, '53, Henry Gardner, '54 and Pete Stifel, '54.
Riding with biology teacher and assistant coach, "Mad" George Whitely, will be Capt. Clark, Dave Kenny, '54, Hoyt, John Appel, '53 and Tony Catlin, '54.
Riding in history (?) teacher Tony Worthington's car will be Carnahan, Ulman and Bill Spencer, '57.
Someone, perhaps English teacher Alex Revell, '43, is probably driving another car with two or three more players.
